TRAINING OBJECTIVE

This training is designed to equip health care professionals with necessary knowledge and skills required to employ early screening tools, including General Movement Assessment and Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE), to identify infants who are at risk of developing cerebral palsy (CP) and apply evidence-based early intervention strategies to improve the health and well-being of the children diagnosed as high-risk for CP or highly predictive of CP.

TRAINING CONTENTS

  • Evidence supporting the use of early detection tools
  • Basics of General Movement Assessment (GMA) and how to record videos for GMA
  • HINE assessment in infants at high risk of cerebral palsy
  • Evidence on intervention strategies for infants and your children with cerebral palsy
  • Goal setting using Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM)
  • Early intervention strategies (e.g. Goal Directed Training (GDT), Game Activity Motor Enrichment (GAME), Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT), Bimanual Therapy (BT), Home Program (HP)
  • International practice guidelines for children with CP

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Learn about evidenced-based early detection tools (e.g. GMA and HINE)
  • Record videos of movement of infants at high-risk of developing CP for GMA
  • Complete HINE assessment for high-risk infants and interpret the HINE scores
  • Work with primary caregivers to set goals for intervention planning
  • Apply evidence-based early intervention strategies including GDT, GAME, CIMT, BT and HP following the international practice guidelines
